Meghan Markle faced criticism for failing to achieve meaningful “progress” during her recent series of appearances in Australia. The Duchess of Sussex spent four days in the country, undertaking multiple engagements alongside her husband, Prince Harry, focused on issues important to them.
Meghan also participated in a women’s retreat weekend, where she discussed navigating media scrutiny since her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry. This followed the Duchess‘s approval ratings dropping to record lows in recent polling.
Meghan’s public standcouple’s returnsibility of rehabilitation have remained central topics among royal observers for years. The news follows the couple’s return home to California on April 19, where they were met with a sweet homecoming from their children.
A PR expert now suggests she could potentially restore it by adhering to one straightforward principle.
Australian-born Renae Smith, founder of PR agency The Atticism, told the Daily Express, “She could win, but it would require a much clearer strategy and a lot more consistency over time.”
“Right now, what we’re seeing is not failure, but it’s also not progress. It’s visibility without evolution,” reports the Express.
Smith referenced some of the Duchess’ remarks during her Australian visit, including her statement about being among the most trolled individuals, noting that she bore some responsibility.
The PR expert elaborated, “There was also that moment where she spoke about being one of the most trolled people of the last decade, and I did feel for her on a human level. No one deserves that level of abuse.
“But from a PR perspective, I think she has to own part of that reality as well. A lot of this hasn’t happened in a vacuum. She has consistently chosen to operate in very public, very polarising spaces, while also sending mixed messages about privacy, control and visibility. That creates tension, and tension invites commentary.”
“When you layer that with inconsistent positioning and a revolving door of PR teams, it becomes less about bad luck and more about a pattern.”
“So yes, there is absolutely a victim element, but there’s also an element of self-creation in how that narrative has evolved over time.”
Smith concluded, saying, “So no, I wouldn’t say she’s done. But I also wouldn’t say this tour changed anything. It was controlled, it was safe, and it landed exactly where you’d expect it to.
“Very much ‘no steps forward, no steps back.'”
