As a former fan of Suits, when Meghan Markle started dating Prince Harry I was quite excited, she was a familiar face and honestly, it was nice to see him happy after years of failed relationships. Over time, the attitude towards them started to change after a number of events, the main one that comes to my mind is when Meghan didn’t want to pose on the steps outside of the hospital after birth. For me, that was something that I was able to defend because pregnancy is the one time where the woman’s needs should be prioritised. When she and Harry moved to the US, I continued to defend her and their desire for “privacy”, but now, six years on, I’ve had enough.
For me the final straw has been Meghan’s decision to earn money off her outfits worn to meet the survivors of the Bondi Beach attack, that’s so far from anything an actual member of the Royal Family would ever do, and it just proves that Meghan isn’t fit for the title. In fact, I’m even more surprised that Harry didn’t put a stop to it.
I had already slowly stopped defending Meghan over the years, at first when I saw her Oprah Winfrey interview I let it slide, I just thought, “they need to get some things off their chest, it’s fine,” but it just kept getting worse. After Oprah, came Spare, after Spare, came Netflix, and so on and so-forth. It became outrageous, and that’s when I started to see what everyone else had been pointing out.
Then, a few weeks ago she went to an event for someone else where the dress code was black and white and she actively opted for the exact same colour as the guest of honour. Now that got alarm bells well and truly ringing because if that were me, I’d have been mortified, but she didn’t bat an eyelid. There’s one thing I can say with certainty, and that is that Kate Middleton would never do that. And now we’ve just got to the lowest of the low. The affiliate scheme. The earning money off her outfit. Ordinarily? Fine. In the wake of a tragedy? Vile.
As soon as I discovered that Meghan was getting commission on purchases based on the items she was wearing during her meeting with the victims of the attack last year I was just mortified. For a minute it looked like she and Harry were on a mission to rebuild their image after it fell into tatters in the six years from Megxit. Alas, clearly not. Meghan and Harry surely have a PR team, so what PR person thought it was a good idea to make money off that?
I do understand that everyone’s got to make an income, but there are some sacrifices to make in order to look like an actual human being and Meghan just didn’t make them. It’s disappointing to see that she didn’t decide to take a day off and say, ‘you know what? Don’t put affiliate links to this,’ or, ‘I’ll wear something that doesn’t earn me commission’, but no. It just looks like it’s all for the cameras, not for the people. They really nearly had me coming back, I thought they were making some positive changes. Lesson learned, I guess!
