The long-awaited sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, The Devil Wears Prada 2, is coming out on May 1, and it’s already faced a huge controversy online. While online users aren’t thrilled about the lack of color grading and abundance of cold-toned lighting, the movie has actually been hit with stereotyping accusations, and the internet is fuming.
In case you missed it, a new teaser dropped on X, the app formerly known as Twitter, showing Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) meeting her new assistant Jin Chao (Helen J. Shen). In the clip, Jin says, “If you don’t want me, you can interview someone else. That’s totally fine. I did go to Yale, 3.86 GPA, lead soprano of the [Yale singing group] the Whiffenpoofs, and my ACT score was 36 on the very first time.”

Now, this monologue, coupled with the character’s sense of style and awkwardness, has online users claiming the screenwriters portrayed Asian stereotypes, and perpetuated said racist stereotypes.

One user wrote about how the character’s name sounds eerily similar to a slur. They wrote, “Why the fk did she pick ‘Jen Chow’? Sounds exactly like “C***g C***g,” bro—real suspicious, or is she just auditioning for the next racist soundboard?” Another person added onto this, saying, “Even without ching chong, her name reads exactly like “真丑/真臭” (zhen chou) which means ‘extremely ugly’ or ‘extremely stinky.’”
Another user wrote in Japanese, “It feels like the way Asians are portrayed in Hollywood movies from 20 years ago.”
And another wrote, “Racist name? Check. Cheap stereotypes? Check. And that’s your ‘thank you’ to your most crucial overseas box office market? You had a goldmine — fans ready to cheer for the classic. Instead, you spat in our face. Now? That goldmine is dust. Your loss. Your fault.”
The Devil Wears Prada 2 reunites the leads of the first movie (Meryl Streep, Hathaway, Stanley Tucci, and Emily Blunt) as they navigate Miranda Priestly’s and Andy Sachs’s return, and their revenge-fueled reunion with Emily Charlton.
