Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, and Linda Ronstadt may go down in history as one of music’s most beloved trios. But their first time performing together was a quiet, almost serendipitous moment that few could have predicted would become so iconic.

On April 27, 1976, the three country legends shared the stage for the very first time during a taping of Dolly!, Parton’s short-lived but memorable syndicated variety series. At the time, each woman was carving out her own path in the music world.

Parton, 80, was rising as a country superstar. Harris, 79, was gaining recognition for her ethereal, roots-inspired sound. And Ronstadt, 79, was dominating the charts with her genre-blending vocals.

The episode itself carried all the charm of a classic variety show, complete with heartfelt performances and easy camaraderie. It opened with Parton singing her 1974 No. 1 hit “Love Is Like a Butterfly” and closed with another chart-topper, “I Will Always Love You”—songs that had already cemented her place in country music history.

But what made the taping truly special was the chemistry between the three artists. Even in that early collaboration, there were hints of the magic that would later define their long-rumored (and eventually realized) partnership as a trio. Their voices, distinct yet deeply complementary, created a harmony that felt both effortless and rare.

Though it would take years before they officially recorded together as the celebrated Trio, this 1976 moment marked the beginning of something much bigger. It was the first spark of a musical bond that fans would come to cherish for decades.

Looking back 50 years later, that performance on Dolly! stands as more than just a television appearance—it’s a milestone in country and folk music history. Three singular talents, one stage, and the start of a collaboration that would become legendary.
