Britain’s King Charles III and Queen Camila touched down in the United States on Monday for the most high-profile trip of his reign so far — a four-day jaunt to America that includes a stop in New York City.
It’s King Charles’ first state visit to the U.S. since he took the crown. Buckingham Palace announced the trip last week; President Donald Trump is the first stop. The Palace said it would continue as planned despite security concerns over the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner shooting over the weekend.
THE ITINERARY
The visit starts Monday, April 27, with a trip to Washington, D.C., to meet with President Donald Trump. They’ll have tea time with the first lady and attend a garden party later in the day.
King Charles is also set to deliver an address to Congress.
It will be only the second time in history a British monarch has addressed a joint session, following Queen Elizabeth II’s speech at the Capitol during her 1991 state visit.
The royal couple heads to New York two days later for events recognizing the economic and cultural ties between the United States and the United Kingdom.
They’ll visit the 9/11 Memorial in recognition of the upcoming 25th anniversary of the terror attacks, and meet with first responders and victims’ families. Mayor Zohran Mamdani is also expected to meet the king at the 9/11 event, though a spokesperson has said the two have not scheduled any private meeting.
The royals have separate events, too. King Charles will visit a grassroots community organization to mentor kids and young people affected by food insecurity. He’ll also meet with business and financial services leaders.
Meanwhile, Queen Camila will attend a literary event and help Winnie the Pooh mark his 100th birthday this year.
Security is expected to be intense with possible street closures and security points.
After their day in New York, the royal couple heads to Virginia, where they’ll attend a “block party” to celebrate America250.
