The Grammy-winning pop star announced the release of her eighth studio album and shared the inspiration behind the project’s emotional tone.

Ariana Grande‘s tour setlist may get a bit longer, as the singer has new music on the way.
The Grammy-winning pop star, who’s set to embark on her Eternal Sunshine Tour this summer, announced the upcoming release of her eighth album, “Petal,” on Tuesday, April 28.
In a statement, Grande described her latest studio effort, which she executive produced and cowrote, as “something that is full of life and growing through the cracks of something cold and hard and challenging.”
The “We Can’t Be Friends” singer, 32, also revealed the artwork for the album’s cover, a close-up black-and-white photo of Grande beaming for the camera.
The album is slated to be released on July 31.
“Petal” comes two years after the release of Grande’s last album, “Eternal Sunshine,” an introspective R&B-tinged record that chronicled the singer’s life following her divorce from husband Dalton Gomez, as well as alleged dating scandal with “Wicked” costar Ethan Slater.
The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart and spawned the hit singles “Yes, and?,” “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” and “The Boy is Mine.” It also earned Grande a trio of Grammy Award nominations, including best pop vocal album.
“The majority of the album stays true to Grande’s glossy pop roots under the tutelage of producer Max Martin,” USA TODAY music critic Melissa Ruggieri wrote in a review of the album. “But Grande still flexes her chameleonic vocal abilities throughout the tracklist.”
A deluxe rerelease of “Eternal Sunshine,” titled “Brighter Days Ahead,” was released last March and featured the synth-pop hit “Twilight Zone,” which peaked at No. 5 on Billboard’s Pop Airplay chart.
Grande will take the album out on the road with The Eternal Sunshine Tour, which kicks off June 6. The world tour, Grande’s first in seven years, is expected to run through Sept. 1.
The pop superstar also remains busy on the silver screen. After starring as Glinda the Good Witch in back-to-back film adaptations of the Broadway musical “Wicked,” Grande will flex her acting muscles some more in the upcoming comedy “Focker-In-Law,” a sequel to “Little Fockers” starring Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro.
And next year, Grande will make her stage debut on London’s West End in a revival of “Sunday in the Park with George,” a production that will reunite her with “Wicked” costar Jonathan Bailey.
