During the Matrix reunion panel at NYCC, Laurence Fishburne made a somewhat definitive statement about his franchise return. While he has voiced and acted as the character Morpheus in the Matrix series for the better part of two decades, Fishburne isn’t sure if he’ll ever return to the films. While singing the original film’s praises, Fishburne admitted that he doesn’t know if a Matrix return “makes sense.” Although this is somewhat troubling news for longtime fans of the character, it demonstrates an incredible amount of tact on the actor’s part.
“It depends on how good it is, really. … If it’s great, then yeah, if it makes sense. I don’t know if it makes sense,” Fishburne said at the NYCC Matrix reunion panel.
If more actors showed this amount of self-awareness, there would be a lot more originality in Hollywood. While this statement can be somewhat disappointing, it demonstrates Fishburne’s deep appreciation for what many consider his breakout role. In recognizing the iconic role his character served in the franchise, he also understands the importance of his overall story arc. Moreover, the actor likely has many more important undertakings than another sequel to an already oversaturated franchise.
Laurence’s statement that he would only return if the movie is good is somewhat nuanced. Given that Fishburne understands the gravity of his character and the franchise, he wouldn’t support a project that didn’t honor its legacy. Therefore, if Fishburne ever chooses to act in another adaptation of the Matrix, fans can feel better about the project. While there were many other things discussed from the Matrix reunion panel, fans mostly chose to focus on Fishburne’s statements about Morpheus’ future, for obvious reasons.
Overall, Laurence Fishburne’s choice to make such a poignant statement on his character’s return is public relations gold. It is the perfect balance of giving the original franchise its due while providing the slimmest bit of hope that he might act in a future Matrix project. That said, many fans are beginning to agree that it might not make sense for Morpheus to return to the franchise after being one of its figureheads for the better part of two decades.
