Donald Trump had an enthused reaction after King Charles III made a cheeky remark during a public speech.
In response to a prior joke by Trump, where the President claimed that European countries would be “speaking German” if not for United States intervention in World War II, King Charles joked, “Dare I say that if it wasn’t for us, you’d be speaking French.”
Chris Pardoe, a body language expert with over a decade of experience in behavioral analysis and human communication, analyzed the interaction, remarking that Trump’s “laughter appears completely genuine, not forced at all.” Trump later praised Charles’ speech as the two stood outside the White House.
Charles’ joke poked fun at an old British and French rivalry, when the two countries were at odds as they both sought control of the then-colonies of what would become the United States.
“There are absolutely no signs of discomfort, defensiveness, or irritation,” added Pardoe of Trump’s reaction to Charles’ pointed joke. Trump thanked the King, saying that Charles even “got the Democrats to stand up,” adding that he’s “never been able to do that.”
Charles delivered another joke at Trump’s expense.
“I cannot help noticing the readjustments to the East Wing, Mr. President, following your visit to Windsor Castle last year. I am sorry to say that we British, of course, made our own attempt at real estate redevelopment of the White House in 1814,” said the King.
In 1814, British soldiers torched the White House as retaliation for the Americans attacking York, which is now Toronto.
