King Charles and Queen Camilla were welcomed to America by Donald Trump and Melania Trump earlier this week, with a lip reader exposing a pointed exchange between the group.
The royals posed for pictures alongside the president and the first lady as they arrived at the White House on Monday, April 27. A video from the meeting showed Trump leaning towards the king and sparking a conversation as he gestured in front of them.
The monarch responded by laughing lightly before saying, “I’m sure you shall show us,” according to Hickling.
The president laughed in response before Hickling suggested he ended the conversation by saying, “That’s right you’re right.”
The lip reader commented on the exchange and suggested Trump was trying to “redirect the interaction” with his comments. She told us, “This moment marks a clear tonal reset.
“After attempting to lead the conversation into more serious territory, Trump shifts into host mode, using physical gesture and invitation to redirect the interaction. Charles meets this with polite, controlled humor. His response, ‘I’m sure you shall show us’.”
She concluded, “The light laughter on both sides diffuses any prior tension, bringing the exchange back in line with formal protocol and public facing expectations.”
King Charles later teased Trump about the White House ballroom project. The king delivered a speech during a state dinner on Tuesday, April 28, during which he said, “It is a particular pleasure to be back in this wonderful building, the heart of your democracy.”
Charles then joked, “On this occasion, I cannot help noticing the readjustments to the East Wing, Mr President, following your visit to Windsor Castle last year. I’m sorry to say that we British, of course, made our own small attempt at real estate redevelopment of the White House in 1814.”
The king’s comments were met with laughter from the audience, including from the Trumps.
He was referring to August 24, 1814, when British Troops set fire to the White House in retaliation for the American attack on the city of York in Ontario, Canada, the year prior.
