Looking surprised at the number of people who had turned out to see him, the King accepted gifts of books and flowers.
Amy Kessler, who was born in the US and now lives in Bermuda, held a poster reading: “I am grateful for your beautiful speech in US Congress.”
Jane Gregory, a retired banker, said she saw the late Queen Elizabeth when she visited in 2009 and had come today for a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to meet the King.
“I’m from England originally, it means a huge amount to me, I’m very excited,” she said.
Sisters Freya, nine, and Sophie, seven, said they were “very excited” to see the King and wave their flags, though they were disappointed they had to return to school once the King had left.
The King’s next stop was St Peter’s church, where he delivered the Speech from the Throne on his last visit to Bermuda in 1970, marking the 350th opening of Bermuda’s parliament.
In the exhibition space at the 1850 Ordnance House, the King viewed items relating to the Transatlantic slave trade, including neck irons from the 1500s that were used for punishment.
