Cake brought their signature deadpan swagger to the Saenger Theater in New Orleans, LA on April 28 and 29 following a performance at the Saenger in Mobile, AL.
After their intro music rolled, the band eased into their first set with “Frank Sinatra.” Highlights from the set included their cover of “Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps“ (Osvaldo Farres) before closing with “Sick of You.”
After a brief intermission, Cake returned not just to play—but to plant something. Continuing a tradition that’s become uniquely their own, the band invited a fan onstage for a tree giveaway, encouraging them to plant it and share its progress on Cake’s website—blending environmental awareness with the group’s offbeat charm.
Set two kicked off with “Opera Singer” and leaned into fan favorites like “Love You Madly” and “Never There.” A crowd-pleasing cover of Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” brought the main set to a close before an encore that was equal parts eclectic and iconic: Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs,” the ever-strutting “Short Skirt/Long Jacket,” and, fittingly, their biggest hit, “The Distance.”
The current lineup features co-founders John McCrea (vocals/guitar) and Vince DiFiore (trumpet/keys), alongside drummer Todd Roper, guitarist Xan McCurdy, and bassist Daniel McCallum—a lineup that continues to deliver the band’s unmistakable blend of alternative rock, funk, and dry humor with effortless precision.
