Jenna Bush Hager became visibly emotional on-air this week while sharing her desire for more “kid-focused” time amid a prolific period in her professional life.
At the start of Thursday’s episode of “Today with Jenna & Sheinelle,” Bush Hager said she was determined to show up for her middle child, 10-year-old Poppy, after an especially busy month that saw her interviewing Queen Camilla and four former U.S. presidents, including her father, George W. Bush.
“I have been working a lot because this has been shooting, and then I’ve had these big interviews and then all the book stuff, and so this morning when I woke up, I thought, ‘OK, the next couple weeks, the next couple months, it’s like kid-focused,’” Bush Hager told her co-host, Sheinelle Jones.
“I’m like, ‘How can I show up for Poppy in a way…’” she continued, before tearing up. “Now I’m crying. I don’t know what’s wrong with me.”

In addition to Poppy, Bush Hager and her husband, Henry Chase Hager, also share a 13-year-old daughter, Mila, and a 6-year-old son, Hal.
Jones ― who is raising three kids as a single mom after the death of her husband, Uche Ojeh, last year ― assured Bush Hager she found the stress of balancing her personal and professional commitments very relatable, and leaned in to support her co-host with a hug.
“We can’t do it all at the same time,” she said.
Bush Hager responded by composing herself once again. “We’re OK,” she quipped, before jokingly adding: “It may look like everything’s great, but things are falling apart.”
As Bush Hager suggests, this spring has kept her on the road and away from her family more so than usual. In addition to her commitments on NBC’s “Today,” she’s released several books through her Thousand Voices publishing imprint.
She can currently be seen on the big screen, with a much-buzzed-about cameo in “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” starring Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep. She also makes an appearance on the forthcoming Peacock series, “The Five-Star Weekend,” and is producing a mystery-themed pilot for the streaming platform that’s slated to star “Six Feet Under” actor Peter Krause.
