Lizzo is heading into a new era with an album on the way and a message for the people watching her every move: she is not rattled.
In a recent interview with CBS Mornings with Gayle King, the Grammy winner opened up about her upcoming album, ‘Bitch,’ set to arrive June 5, and explained why she chose to turn a word that has long been used against women into something powerful. “It’s my favorite word,” she said of the title track and album name, adding that the latest single samples Meredith Brooks’ “Bitch” and Missy Elliott’s “She’s a Bitch.”
“I feel like what both of those women did was they pushed that word forward in a way that empowered it, instead of taking the power away. Like that’s a word that used to get hurled at women,” Lizzo said.
Lizzo also addressed the yearslong, controversial legal battle that has hovered over her career. In 2023, three former backup dancers filed a lawsuit alleging a hostile work environment and sexual harassment during her tour, with one dancer also claiming weight-based shaming. CBS News reported that the weight-shaming allegation was later dismissed, while some sexual harassment claims remain, and Lizzo said she is appealing the ruling and will not settle because she knows what’s true. If the case goes to trial, Lizzo said she’s ready to testify, saying, “The truth will come out, and that’s why I’m not afraid of it.”
For Lizzo, the new music is not a distraction from the headlines — it is the point. She said a shelved project from last year was her decision, not a delay forced by anyone else, and explained that her focus is back on giving fans music that feels true to her. “I didn’t delay anything,” she said, adding that she is here to make music and give music to her fans.
She also reflected on her weight-loss journey, saying it was tied to releasing anxiety and depression rather than chasing anyone else’s idea of what her body should look like. Lizzo said she is “not a skinny person” and does not plan to become one, while also shutting down speculation about how she lost weight by saying it came down to “a calorie deficit, cardio, and protein.” She added that she briefly tried a GLP-1 drug years ago, but it did not work for her.
Through it all, Lizzo says her confidence remains rooted in her music and her heart. As she looks ahead to touring again, she says she knows both are strong enough to carry her forward. “I know the music is good and I know my heart is good,” she said. “People are gonna say what they wanna say.”
