Teen rock trio Thunder Queens are ready to begin an exciting new chapter as they enter their final two years of high school with the release of their sophomore album, Deep Below. Due September 24 via Victory Pool Records, Deep Below finds longtime friends Lola Good (vocals, drums), Violet Bruneel (vocals, electric guitar), and Clara Magnan (bass) embracing a bold new sonic, visual, and emotional identity, with stronger songwriting, bigger production, and a more mature perspective.

At a time when many listeners focus on individual singles, Thunder Queens hope fans, both old and new, will immerse themselves in Deep Below as a complete album. Every song contributes to a larger story, inviting listeners to fully experience the world the band has created.

Alongside the album announcement, Thunder Queens share the powerful title track produced by Grammy Award-winning Dave Schiffman (Smashing Pumpkins, PUP, Vampire Weekend), and its striking official video. Evolving from a single point, “Deep Below” sits at the heart of the band’s next chapter, pointing toward a heavier and more emotionally expansive record. Built around a riff Bruneel had been saving for the right moment, the song explores a changing relationship between two people, capturing the ache, uncertainty, and strange nostalgia of realizing something is already slipping away.

Full of melancholic joy and bittersweet harmonies, “Deep Below” begins as a swaying 6/8 ballad time before opening into something uniquely Thunder Queens, driven by the band’s unmistakable chemistry and dynamic musicianship.

Recorded this spring at Dream House Studios with Schiffman, the band pushed into new sonic territory while still “capturing that live energy of performing,” says Good.

As the final verse arrives, the song shifts toward acceptance. “’Deep Below’ is a musically challenging piece for all of us, but it’s our true epic ballad,” says Bruneel. Beneath the heavy thrashing conclusion are layers of guitar and screaming feedback that channel the raw emotion at its core.

“’Deep Below’ was written to show others that they’re not alone, and that even though we all have our own unique paths, we’re connected through vulnerability,” shares Magnan. “The song is about realizing something is changing, and how letting go can feel impossible until you finally understand that holding on is hurting you too,” adds Good.

Working at Dream House Studios was a really special experience for the band. “The studio is in downtown Toronto, so between recording sessions we got to explore the city a bit,” says Bruneel. “We worked really hard on our instrumentation for ‘Deep Below’ to create the tone and intricate details that convey the emotional roller coaster of the song. Dave Schiffman is an incredible producer who really matched our workflow, always encouraging us to take our time and create a full live sound.”

The official video serves as an abstract visual companion to the song’s themes. Directors Genevieve LeFeuvre and Brandon Emeny pulled inspiration from Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead, using a body-mounted camera to portray an otherworldly force that splits the band apart.

“We wanted the music video to evoke both sweet and uneasy feelings, just as the song is meant to,” says Magnan. “After being separated, the video follows each of us through isolated environments that represent finding ourselves and following our own paths.”

The directors also employed a technique associated with infamous director, David Lynch, during Bruneel’s ‘void’ scenes, creating a shifting focus effect through free lensing by removing and repositioning the camera lens.

The band also challenged the directors to film an underwater scene with Good, resulting in one of the video’s most memorable moments. The scene reinforces lyrics including “I will swim back to shore,” “take a deep breath and let the bubbles rise above,” and “Deep Below my heart will go.”
Toward the end of the video, each member experiences flashbacks of their shared friendship, inspiring them to break free from their separate paths and reunite to perform together once again.

“We hope the viewers come away feeling hopeful and experience the same emotional journey we do when they listen to ‘Deep Below,’” says Magnan.

This summer, Thunder Queens returned to Dream House Studios with Dave Schiffman to complete Deep Below, an album that marks a defining moment in the band’s evolution. The album will also include their recent single “Wait” and the previously released tracks “Teenage Years” and “Birds on a Wire,” remastered by Ryan Dahle and co-produced by the band and JUNO-nominated producer Thom D’Arcy.

Ahead of its release, the trio will perform at Rock the Coliseum, Paris Drinks Fest, Punk Rock Flea Fest, and a run of dates with Cancer Bats. Fans can also look forward to more new music, additional tour dates, and some exciting announcements to come!
