SAN ANTONIO, TX — Two-time Latin Grammy winner Michael Salgado is gearing up for a major return to the Alamo City as he headlines one of the biggest Cinco de Mayo celebrations of the year alongside Latin music star Alicia Villarreal at Cowboys Dancehall.
During a recent interview on Tejano 95.7 FM with morning host Jonny Ramirez, Salgado shared his excitement about returning to San Antonio for the highly anticipated Cinco de Mayo concert on Tuesday, May 5.
“It’s been a while since we performed in San Antonio,” Salgado said. “But what better day than Cinco de Mayo? We want to invite everybody to come out… we’ve got a little bit of a surprise at the beginning of my show for everybody.”
The event, billed as San Antonio’s official Cinco de Mayo celebration, promises a full evening of entertainment with doors opening at 7 p.m., including mariachi performances and cultural showcases before the headliners take the stage. Salgado is expected to kick off his set around 9 p.m.
Fans can expect a dynamic mix of classics and new material, including songs from his latest release, Homenaje a Mis Ídolos Vol. 2, a tribute album honoring the legends who shaped his musical journey.
“It’s kind of a tribute album where it’s got a lot of great songs from a lot of great artists,” Salgado explained. “We’ll be performing some of those new songs, of course, and all the hits of the past — ‘Cruz de Madera,’ ‘Palomita Blanca,’ and many more.”
The concert also reunites Salgado and Villarreal on stage, something that hasn’t happened frequently over the years.
“The last time before recently was probably the late ’90s,” he said. “So it was great to reconnect, and now we’re doing it again.”
While fans can look forward to a memorable performance, Salgado hinted that the collaboration with Villarreal might not end there.
“That’s a good question,” he said when asked about a potential duet. “Maybe when I see her tomorrow, we’ll throw that in and see what comes of it.”
Beyond the stage, Salgado continues to evolve as an artist more than three decades into his career. The Tejano star revealed he is currently working on a new country album, expanding his signature conjunto sound into new territory.
“I’ve got a couple of songs in the works right now,” he shared. “One of them is called ‘Sipping on Some Patrón,’ something a little different than what I’ve done. And another one, ‘Still Missing You,’ is more of a feel song for those who’ve lost someone.”
Reflecting on his longevity, Salgado acknowledged how much the industry has changed since his early days.
“Thirty-one years now,” he said. “I remember going to radio in ’94, ’95… and like they say, don’t blink, because 30 years later, here we are.”
Despite the changes, his connection with fans remains strong — something he deeply appreciates.
“Thanks, San Antonio, for always being a supporter,” Salgado said. “Make sure to come out and join us… it’s going to be a great night.”
