Mariachi brothers Antonio, Caleb, and Joshua Gámez-Cuéllar transitioned from being detained by ICE during the Trump administration to opening for chart-topping country artist Kacey Musgraves.
The mariachi trio performed as the opening act for Kacey during her three consecutive nights at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, Texas, spanning May 3 through May 5. The audience responded enthusiastically to the band as they warmed up the stage for the 37-year-old singer during her ongoing Middle of Nowhere tour.
In early March, the three brothers were taken into custody by ICE, federal immigration authorities, following a mandatory check-in with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Soon after the family’s release from detention, Kacey extended a personal invitation for them to accompany her on tour. This comes as Kacey recently claimed she was chased by aliens during a flight from Fort Worth to Nashville.
During the family’s initial detention by ICE, they were separated as Antonio was below 18 years of age and placed in a separate facility from his parents and siblings because of the age gap.
In a conversation with NPR, Antonio’s mother, Emma Cuéllar, discussed the devastating experience of witnessing her child being separated from her.
She revealed, “As a family, we’ve never been apart from each other. The day before the detention, I had three sons, and the next day I’m missing one.”
During their set alongside Kacey, the Mariachi ensemble delivered renditions of ‘La Bamba’ and ‘Cielito Lindo.’ As the group took the stage, 18-year-old Antonio offered thanks for the opportunity to perform before the packed audience.
Antonio said, “Thank you, Father, for giving us this great opportunity. We ask you, Father, to protect us and bathe us in your light.”
Following Kacey’s decision to invite the Mariachi group onto her stage, the country artist received widespread praise and appreciation from supporters across social media platforms. On Instagram, beneath a post from @nowthisisiimpact covering the story, admirers commended the singer for leveraging her influence positively.
One admirer commented, “Our Country Queen Kacey makes me feel a semblance of pride for the US.” Another remarked, “And she’s been this amazing person this whole time!! Great music, great example!”
A third fan contributed, “Wow, what an amazing way to use her platform!”
Another observer noted, “Lots of people will think country is just racist conservatives (which a lot of it is), but also it is entirely created upon people who actively were against the government and patriarchy.”
