The two have been friends since the ’80s when they worked on their song “If I Could Turn Back Time”
Diane Warren is sharing a hilarious interaction that she had with Cher.
She posted a photo of them together on X, and in the caption, she recalled what the Grammy winner told her.
“You’re annoying but U write great songs,” Warren, 69, wrote in quotes.
Though it was a backhanded compliment, Warren said she was amused by Cher’s comment.
“Haha thnx @Cher,” she added with a series of emojis.
Warren and Cher, 79, have known each other for quite some time. In 1989, they collaborated on Cher’s smash hit “If I Could Turn Back Time,” which was originally written by Warren.
Warren also wrote other classics like Toni Braxton‘s “Un-Break My Heart” and Céline Dion‘s “Because You Loved Me.” But when it came time to work with Cher, she told PEOPLE in 2021 that she had to beg the “Strong Enough” singer to take on her song “If I Could Turn Back Time.”
“She hated it,” Warren said. “I went to the studio and literally got on my knees and said, ‘I’ll pay for it. If you don’t like it, don’t use it.’ She agreed. I remember looking at her in the booth and the look on her face when she sang the opening line, like, ‘You bitch, you were right.'”
Cher looked back on that time during a 2025 interview with PEOPLE and said she was glad that Warren talked her into singing the bop.
