A handcrafted sign adorned with silk flowers has been placed outside the Catalina Foothills residence of Nancy Guthrie.
The 84 year old mother of NBC Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, as Mother’s Day nears with the disappeared woman’s whereabouts remaining a mystery. The sign states, “To the abductor. Your mom would be ashamed if she knew what you did. So, before you take her flowers on Mother’s Day, take Nancy home or tell the family where she is so they can celebrate on Mother’s Day. Do the right thing. Then you can go home to yours.”
Guthrie was last observed at approximately 9:45 p.m. on January 31, when relatives left her at her residence after dining together. She was declared missing the following day when she didn’t show up for a planned virtual church gathering. She hasn’t been located in 97 days, though there’s hope she could still be alive.
The sign’s emergence coincides with a public disagreement between federal and local authorities regarding the case’s management during its crucial initial period. FBI Director Kash Patel recently condemned the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, claiming the agency was initially excluded from the investigation.
“What we, the FBI, do is say, ‘Hey, we’re here to help. What do you need? What can we do?’ And for four days, we were kept out of the investigation,” Patel stated during a podcast interview, reports the Mirror US.
Patel indicated that investigators only obtained crucial Ring doorbell video evidence depicting an armed individual at Guthrie’s entrance after the FBI became involved. He noted that the FBI had proposed sending DNA samples to their Quantico, Virginia facility for examination. “We would have analyzed it within days and maybe gotten better information or more information,” he stated.
However, the Pima County Sheriff’s Office contradicted this version of events, asserting that local authorities and the Guthrie family alerted the FBI immediately and that agents were on-site the first evening. Officials also confirmed this week that human remains found in the vicinity of Guthrie’s residence are ancient and bear no connection to the case. DNA testing and video footage review continue, with assistance from laboratories nationwide.
In her first public remarks since her mother’s disappearance, Savannah Guthrie shared with “Today” co-host Hoda Kotb her concern that her celebrity status might have endangered her mother.
“It’s too much to bear to think that I brought this to her bedside, that it’s because of me,” she said. “And I just want to say I’m so sorry, Mommy. I’m so sorry.”
