Instead, he leans directly into discomfort, fragmentation, and unpredictability, creating an experience that feels immersive in the truest sense of the word. One moment you’re floating through eerie ambient passages and the next you’re swallowed by distorted bass, glitch effects, wild percussion, and moody vocals that come together for something still somehow cohesive.
Taking away the instrumental side for just a moment, there’s still a deliberate narrative behind the chaos. He threads themes of technological anxiety, AI’s growing influence on creativity, and the emotional exhaustion of modern life throughout the record. It’s music that wrestles directly with the current moment instead of escaping from it.
The production work here is genuinely remarkable, especially considering the album was composed, recorded, mixed, and mastered entirely by Xeno Ray JNB himself in a bedroom studio. The level of detail packed into these tracks is staggering. If you’re not listening with headphones on, you’re missing up. They’re mandatory because there are countless hidden details lurking beneath the surface of the mix. If anything, you’ve got to listen to this record at least 3-4 times to miss anything you might’ve skipped over the first time around.
The collaborations with Jaydee Great and Dashawn Marvelle add even more texture to the album’s already massive sonic palette. They only feature on two songs, but their appearances are paramount to the whole project.
Mono Modern feels nocturnal, anxious, cinematic, and strangely beautiful all at once. It’s the soundtrack to late nights or maybe a reflective episode where the world is revolving around you. Most importantly, this record is immensely original. Truly original. In an era where so much music feels optimized for familiarity, Xeno Ray JNB delivers a record that takes risks, embraces complexity, and trusts listeners enough to challenge them.
