While major studio bosses haggle over multimillion-dollar budgets, a determined group of recognizable actors has discreetly created one of the web’s most compelling crime dramas for less than seven thousand dollars.
MOUSE is a 14-episode psychological thriller produced entirely independent of the conventional Hollywood system by Short Snacks Entertainment, the indie production company co-founded by actress and co-creator Shélah Larson alongside director Roth Rind.
What emerged is a series with the polish of premium TV, crafted by a skeleton crew that at times consisted of merely two or three individuals.
Leading the cast is Lanny Joon (Baby Driver, Wolf Pack) as Detective Sam Park, a tormented detective desperately attempting to suppress his brutal history before it consumes him.
Joon delivers a restrained yet powerful performance that grounds each scene.
Across from him, Larson portrays Joey with an understated menace that leaves audiences constantly unsettled, while her influence permeates the entire production both on screen and off.
The venture materialized after Rind became frustrated waiting for development deals that consistently fell through. Larson allegedly cut to the chase with one simple question, “So what’s stopping you?” Within days, production had commenced, reports the Mirror US.
“The industry system was crowded,” said Larson.
“The only way to get anything made was to have the big crews, big money, and most of all, permission. We reminded ourselves of why we got into this business, to make movies.”
The supporting cast underscores the seriousness with which the creative team approached the project.
Syra McCarthy (Grey’s Anatomy, The Dropout) provides emotional depth as Rachel. Shane Yoon (Modern Family) injects warmth as Sam’s brother Charlie.

Linc Hand (42, Imperium) delivers gravitas as the Priest. Danny Parker-Lopes (Minority Report) dominates scenes as Chief Daniels.
Completing the ensemble are Jennifer Ekpunobi, PJ Schulte, Mark Shiva, Trent James, Hidekun Hah, and Kevin Kemp.
Cinematographer Matthew Intil crafted the show’s tense, intimate visual aesthetic. Producer Kyle Cummins (Lost) maintained logistical coherence. Co-writer Brandon Silberstein collaborated with Rind on the script, while composers Ross Lara and Justin Wilmott created a haunting sonic identity that far exceeds its budget constraints.
“This was one of the most fun and creative experiences of my life with an amazing cast and crew,” said actor PJ Schulte.
“When you remove the excess, what you’re left with is performance, framing, and timing. That’s where the story actually lives,” Rind explains.
