Tina Knowles said watching Blue Ivy Carter step onto the Met Gala carpet felt like history repeating itself—this time across generations.
Speaking a day after the 2026 event, Knowles described an emotional reaction to seeing her granddaughter alongside her daughter, Beyoncé. The 14-year-old made a rare appearance at fashion’s biggest night, attending with both of her parents, including Jay-Z, despite the gala’s longstanding 18-and-over guideline.
Knowles explained that the moment carried deeper meaning because it mirrored Beyoncé’s own early rise. Blue Ivy, already a visible presence as one of her mother’s principal dancers on tour, appeared poised and self-assured on the carpet—an image that closely aligned with Beyoncé’s teenage debut in the spotlight.
“I got really emotional, shed a few tears,” Knowles said during the 3rd Hour of Today.
She added that the experience felt “kind of reminiscent,” noting, “Beyoncé started her first red carpet at 15, and Blue is 14… it was déjà vu.”
The visual parallels were hard to miss. Blue Ivy wore a white strapless Balenciaga gown paired with a matching jacket and crystal-embellished heels, coordinating subtly with her mother’s look.
Beyoncé, who served as a co-chair for the evening, returned to the Met Gala for the first time in a decade in a crystal-covered gown with a skeletal motif, layered with a feathered cape and Chopard diamonds.
Jay-Z complemented the moment in a black Louis Vuitton tuxedo.
The appearance also arrives during a busy stretch for the family. Jay-Z is preparing to headline Philadelphia’s Roots Picnic, marking major anniversaries tied to Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint, while anticipation continues to build around Beyoncé’s next musical release.
Notably, she did not use the Met Gala to make any announcements, keeping details about her upcoming project under wraps.
Knowles addressed that speculation directly with humor, saying, “I said before, I could tell you, but I’d have to kill you.”
