SA: Bongani Fassie returns with new EP Skomline

The EP is described as reflecting a period of personal change and artistic reassessment, with themes centred on recovery, reinvention and creative realignment. It follows a period of relative absence from the mainstream music scene.

According to the artist, the project draws directly from lived experience and personal development. “Skomline is a deeply personal body of work that reflects a journey of redemption, rebirth, and realignment,” Fassie said. “After time away, I channelled my experiences into a project that is both raw and intentional.”

The release combines high-energy production with more introspective elements, blending gqom-influenced rhythms with broader contemporary African electronic sounds. The title track, Skomline, sits at the centre of the project and is positioned as its key statement, reflecting a more assertive artistic direction.

The EP also signals a shift in tone for Fassie, who uses the project to re-establish his presence in the industry while drawing on themes of transformation and personal growth. Its sound merges underground dance influences with more accessible production, aiming to bridge different audience spaces within South African music.

Fassie, who is based in Johannesburg, is the son of late South African music icon Brenda Fassie and has previously worked across various styles within the local music landscape. His latest release continues his exploration of contemporary African sounds while engaging with electronic and dance music traditions.

With Skomline, Fassie presents a body of work framed around reinvention and creative independence, marking what he describes as a new phase focused on artistic clarity and evolution.
