Karla Sofía Gascón is speaking out about the controversy she faced amid the 2025 film awards season.
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Emilia Pérez star, 54, said, “The whole tweet story now feels almost like a childish tale.” The Spanish actress faced backlash over old posts on X (formerly Twitter) that criticized Muslim culture, George Floyd, diversity and more.
“Given the current climate, it’s not hard to understand where it came from and who was behind it. Someone decided who I should be in people’s minds and built a narrative to fit that image,” said Gascón, who made Oscars history by becoming the first openly transgender acting contender for leading 2024’s Jacques Audiard-directed musical thriller Emilia Pérez.
“With time and perspective, I’ve fully understood this fabrication, used simply to prevent an actress from winning an award because of what she represents,” continued Gascón. “When the time comes, I will speak more in depth about it.”

The Hollywood Reporter‘s line of questioning regarding Gascón’s controversy stemmed from her playing a villain in her new movie Trinidad. In the action-adventure Western written and directed by Laura Alvea and José Ortuño, set to premiere in Spain in November, the actress plays a villain — a character she described to Spanish newspaper Canarias7 last October as a female Darth Vader.
When asked how taking on a villainous role related to how some may see Gascón as a villain following her resurfaced tweets, she responded, “I choose my roles based on my interpretive abilities, the acting challenge they present, and above all, the life contrast they offer — allowing me to explore different versions of the human being.”
Her Trinidad role, “is a clear example of how far the character is from my reality, far removed from the image some tried to attach to me in their attempt to defame me,” she added. “I am one of the least harmful people in this world.”

In January 2025, Gascón gave several statements and interviews defending herself over the controversial old tweets, eventually apologizing and vowing silence on social media. She alluded to them in a recent Instagram post comparing her controversy with Timothée Chalamet‘s backlash over comments he made about the perceived popularity of ballet and opera.
Trinidad will be Gascón’s first major screen project after the Oscar-winning Emilia Pérez. Reportedly among her other upcoming projects is The Life Lift costarring Vincent Gallo.
