ST. LOUIS — Alec Burleson drove in two runs and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 on Saturday in the second game of the annual I-70 series, much to the delight of some boisterous and shirtless fans in the right-field seats.

The game was delayed by rain at the start by 46 minutes.

Kyle Leahy (5-3) pitched six innings in his first career start against the Royals. He allowed one run on five hits. George Soriano got his second save despite giving up a leadoff home run to Jac Caglianone in the ninth.

Former University of Central Arkansas pitcher Noah Cameron (2-3) worked 6 innings, giving up 3 runs on 5 hits.

The Stephen F. Austin club baseball team attended Friday’s game and caused a sensation by the players took off their shirts and waved them like a helicopter. The team returned in the fourth inning Saturday after winning a game earlier in the National Club Baseball Division II World Series in nearby Alton, Ill.

St. Louis has won four of its last five games. Since Interleague play began in 1997, the Cardinals are 81-55 against Kansas City.

The Royals have lost six in a row. Kansas City has lost 17 of its first 23 road games, the second-worst mark in the majors.

Burleson’s two-out RBI single in the eighth extended the lead to 4-1.

Thomas Saggese ended his 0-for-30 slump that was the longest active hitless streak in MLB with a leadoff single in the fifth inning. He scored on a fielder’s choice by sliding safely at home. A sacrifice fly by Masyn Winn then gave St. Louis a 3-1 lead.

The Royals tied it at 1-1 in the fifth. Maikel Garcia hit a one-out double and scored on Vinnie Pasquantino’s two-out single to center.

St. Louis went up 1-0 in the first on a sacrifice fly by Burleson.

MARLINS 10, RAYS 5 (10) Liam Hicks had a two-run RBI single in an eight-run 10th inning and Miami ended Tampa Bay’s 11-game home winning streak. Jakob Marsee added three hits and Javier Sanoja had four RBI for the Marlins. Hicks, who entered the game tied for the major league lead in RBI, hit a single through a drawn-in infield off Hunter Bigge (1-1) to break a 2-2 tie. Bigge gave up all 8 runs, 7 earned, with 6 hits and 2 walks in the 10th. Tampa Bay lost its first home game since April 21. Miami’s Pete Fairbanks (1-2), who signed in December after seven seasons with Tampa Bay, got the win despite allowing the tying run in the bottom of the ninth. The former Rays closer gave up an RBI single to Nick Fortes that scored Cedric Mullins.

NATIONALS 13, ORIOLES 3 Cade Cavalli took a shutout into the seventh inning, Keibert Ruiz homered and drove in a career-high five runs and Washington reached the .500 mark for the first time in two years with a victory over Baltimore. Jacob Young and Brady House also homered for the Nationals, who were 0-15 in games in which they were a win away from a .500 record after being 20-20 on May 14, 2024. They won the first game of a doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox that day, but lost the nightcap — and have been trying to reach .500 again since. Cavalli (2-2) carried a shutout into the seventh inning before allowing back-to-back home runs to Samuel Bassallo and Tyler O’Neill. It was the second time in his 21 career starts, and first this season, that the right-hander pitched into the seventh. Cavalli allowed 3 runs, 8 hits and struck out 8. Ruiz, who was a triple shy of the cycle, hit a three-run homer off Chris Bassitt (3-3) to give the Nationals a 3-0 lead in the second. It was the Nationals catcher’s third home run in his last five games.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

PHILLIES 6, PIRATES 0 Cristopher Sanchez struck out a career-high 13 while picking up the second shutout of his career as Philadelphia drilled Pittsburgh. Sanchez (5-2), the National League Cy Young runner-up a year ago, allowed five hits and didn’t issue a walk while extending his scoreless streak to 29 2/3 innings, dropping his ERA to 1.82. Bryce Harper smashed a 457-foot three-run home run off the batter’s eye in the first inning off Bubba Chandler (1-5). Trea Turner and Alec Bohm had two hits apiece. Kyle Schwarber, baseball’s leading home run hitter, added an RBI single as the Phillies gave Sanchez an early five-run lead and cruised.

ROCKIES 4, DIAMONDBACKS 2 Jake McCarthy singled twice and drove in a run against his former team, helping Colorado beat Arizona. McCarthy, who played for Arizona from 2021-25, singled in the second inning to make it 3-1. He had at least one hit for the 14th time in Colorado’s past 18 games. Over that stretch, he’s hitting .375. Hunter Goodman, Brenton Doyle and Willi Castro also had two hits apiece for the Rockies, and Mickey Moniak had his team-leading 27th and 28th RBI. The Rockies had lost 11 of their previous 14 games, including five of their past six. Tomoyuki Sugano (4-3) gave up two earned runs in five innings for the victory, while Eduardo Rodriguez (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing 9 hits and 3 earned runs in 5 1/3 innings.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

BLUE JAYS 2, TIGERS 1 (10) Daulton Varsho drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the 10th inning and Yohendrick Pinango homered to lead Toronto to a victory over Detroit. Varsho lined a 1-1 pitch from Tigers reliever Tyler Holton (0-2) into center field, allowing Vladimir Guerrero to score. Blue Jays reliever Louis Varland (2-1) pitched the final 2 innings, allowing 2 hits and striking out 2. Toronto used six pitchers who struck out 14. The Tigers, who were 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position, had a chance to win it in the ninth inning with Riley Greene on third and two outs, but Varland struck out Colt Keith.
