King James IV of Scotland (reigned 1488–1513) married Margaret Tudor, the eldest daughter of King Henry VII of England and sister to Henry VIII, on August 8, 1503, in a lavish ceremony at Holyrood Abbey in Edinburgh. This union, famously known as the “Union of the Thistle and the Rose,” was the result of long negotiations designed to secure peace between Scotland and England, with the hope that their bloodlines would unite the two kingdoms. Although James was known for his charisma and numerous mistresses—particularly after the suspicious death of his favored mistress, Margaret Drummond—he reportedly grew fond of his young English bride, who was only 13 at the time of the wedding while James was 30. The couple had six children, though only one survived infancy: the future King James V.
The peace established by this marriage ultimately collapsed, leading to the dramatic end of James IV’s reign. In 1513, adhering to the “Auld Alliance” with France, James invaded England, which was then commanded by his brother-in-law, Henry VIII. James was killed on September 9, 1513, at the Battle of Flodden in Northumberland, making him the last British monarch to die in battle. The Scottish army was crushed, and many of Scotland’s nobility perished alongside him. Because he was under papal excommunication at the time of his death, his body lay unburied for years, with reports suggesting his remains were eventually misplaced or lost.
