Palma Day Club to launch new Charleston music event series

CHARLESTON— Every Saturday this summer, a new event series at the site of a former private social club will allow swimsuit-clad attendees to lounge in private cabanas, float in a clear blue pool and bob their heads to house music played by popular DJs.

Palma Day Club, a pop-up music event series presented by Project 92, will launch May 22 at the former The Wonderer location on the upper peninsula. Xandra, a DJ and social media influencer who has performed at festivals such as Lollapalooza, will bring the beats.

Ryan Williams, the co-founder of Palma Day Club who books the talent, said the events are designed to bolster Charleston’s already growing house music scene and spark connections between like-minded people.

“Basically, the goal long term is to be able to build an environment and community that people know is going to be fun and good music, and maybe a place that you can come and discover new sounds or artists that you hadn’t heard exactly before,” he said.

Palma Day Club, which began last summer at Montauk Beach House in New York, will hold events every Saturday from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Each Sunday, the group will host rotating DJs and live bands, as well as curated sponsor activations. Project 92 partners with Eric Gussin, owner of the EDM nightclub Trio, for the Charleston series.

Williams said DJs are chosen partly based on their availability, but he also targets artists who wouldn’t typically perform in Charleston.

He selected BLOND:ISH, a Canadian DJ with over 6 million monthly listeners on Spotify, to perform during Palma Day Club’s first official event May 23. Many people in Charleston may have heard her music without knowing who she is or seeing her perform, he said.

“That was important for us to set the tone for Palma and the Charleston market,” Williams said. “We want to do something that’s different.”

Palma Day Club events will run from noon to 8 p.m., and DJs will perform throughout the day. Mackall said he hopes the events will provide guests with a reprieve from everyday life and allow them to imagine they’re on vacation in another city or at a music festival.

”We’re just looking to create that escape for people,” he said.

General admission tickets to Palma Day Club will start at around $30 and increase in price as the event draws closer.

Standard tickets include admission, access to the club’s bars and first-come, first-served poolside seating. VIP cabanas are also available to rent.

Additional details about pricing and the event lineup can be found on the Palma Day Club website.

Eventually Palma Day Club will expand beyond The Wonderer location to include pop-ups at venues around the Charleston area and extend its programming to include year-round events, Mackall said.

For now, folks can look forward to grooving in the sunshine, sipping drinks by the pool and perhaps discovering a new favorite DJ.
