The well-documented bridesmaid dress row between the Princess of Wales and Meghan Markle has been described as the “lightning rod” between their tension. Meghan, 44, tied the knot with Prince Harry, 41, on this day in 2018, with then-three-year-old Princess Charlotte acting as one of the Duchess of Sussex’s bridesmaids.
Princess Catherine is said to have told Meghan that her daughter’s was “too big, too long, too baggy”, adding that the young royal even cried when she tried the dress on at home. According to Harry’s bombshell memoir, Spare, which was released in 2023, the disagreement was further exacerbated by Catherine’s unwillingness to take Charlotte to Meghan’s tailor at Kensington Palace.
Writing in his memoir, Harry revealed that Meghan didn’t reply back to Catherine straight away as she dealing with “the chaos” surrounding her father’s pending absent from her wedding day.
He wrote: “Meg didn’t reply to Kate straight away. Yes, she had endless wedding-related texts, but mostly she was dealing with the chaos surrounding her father. So the next morning she texted Kate that our tailor was standing by.”
With Meghan having told Catherine that the tailor, who was called Ajay, was at “the palace”, Harry wrote darkly of the suggestion that it “wasn’t sufficient”.
Reading the text from Catherine, Meghan snapped back: “Right, and I told you the tailor has been standing by since 8am. Here. At KP. Can you take Charlotte to have it altered, as the other mums are doing?”
Accussed to Harry’s version of events, Catherine replied: “No, all the dresses need to be remade.” The 44-year-old also told Meghan that she had spoken to her “own wedding designer”, who had agreed.
During an interview with Good Morning America back in 2023, Harry said: “It’s so petty but the bridesmaids’ dresses. While I was writing the book we were on version 29 or 30, all of which involved my wife supposedly making numerous people within my family cry which simply wasn’t the case. For historical reference, the truth needs to be there and it needs to come from me.”
The Princess of Wales and Meghan are not thought to have spoken in a number of years.
The couple stepped down from royal life in 2020, moving to the US with their young son, now-seven-year-old Prince Archie, just weeks later. They later welcomed Princess Lilibet in 2021, just over a year after their move to California.
