Under Queen Camilla’s “sweet smile” is a “secret steely nature,” one that aids her in her role as protector of her husband, King Charles, a royal biographer said.
The 78-year-old Queen and the British monarch, 77, have been locked in a less-than-conventional love affair with one another practically from the moment of their first meeting at a polo match in 1970. Charles and Camilla‘s love didn’t diminish, even while they were married to separate people, and in 2005, they finally got to celebrate their relationship when they tied the knot.
The King and Queen’s romance has only strengthened since their Coronation. Now, Christopher Wilson, author of A Greater Love–Charles and Camilla, claims the Queen’s job, as she views it, is to “support and protect her man.”
Wilson told The Daily Mail that Camilla has a “secret steely nature” behind her “sweet smile.”
He added, “She’s every bit as convincing as the old Queen Mother was when it comes to putting on a sweet smile and saying just the right thing to put people at their ease.”
Wilson explained, “But—again like the Queen Mum—there’s a ruthless streak to Camilla which she takes care to keep hidden from view. Monarchy is about survival, and Camilla understands that.
“She’s read the history books and knows how, when the House of Windsor was brought to its knees in 1936 with the abdication of King Edward VIII, [the Queen Mother] put fire in the belly of her reluctant husband [King George VI], turning him into a successful wartime monarch who did a great double act with Prime Minister Winston Churchill.”
Wilson added, “King George needed her ironclad courage, just as King Charles needs Camilla’s today.”
The author cited a former courtier when he told The Daily Mail, “If Charles has a weakness, it’s that he’s too kind and too forgiving when things go wrong—just as his mother was. He’s lucky to have Camilla there to stiffen his backbone when needed.”
Previously, Wilson told People that Camilla had “never contemplated the idea of becoming queen” for “most of her life.”
“It’s a hell of a challenge being permanently in the spotlight at this age, but she’s tough and can take it,” he added.
A source close to the royal household agreed with Wilson’s assertion of Camilla’s tough personality. “She is quite steely,” the source said, adding, “She went through a lot to be by his side.”
Wilson added that Charles and Camilla “work well as a team.”
He said, “It’s impressive. Her presence reassures him. Despite all the trappings of majesty, it’s cold and lonely at the top, and it’s easy to see the comfort she provides him.”
Charles and Camilla, who have now been married for 21 years, recently broke royal protocol by sharing a rare public kiss as they parted ways after their successful U.S. state visit on April 30.
The peck on the lips came while the couple was attending a block party in Virginia, celebrating the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence.
They were seen “exchanging a brief smooch” before getting into the car, according to Hello! Charles and Camilla are not typically known for showing public displays of affection.
However, the pair “decided to make an exception,” the outlet added, “as they will be parted for a few days and thousands of miles apart.” The King was headed for a solo visit to Bermuda, while the Queen returned to the U.K.
As the U.S. state visit ended, Charles and Camilla also released a new portrait, which was taken at the White House’s guest house, Blair House.
In the shot, the couple looks lovingly at one another.
They wrote alongside the photo, “Farewell and thank you for the warmth of your welcome and the kind support you gave us throughout our first visit to the U.S. as king and queen in this, your special anniversary year.”
“We leave a piece of our [heart emoji] behind and take a little of yours back home with us,” the message continued. “Until the next time…God Bless America.”
