The fall of Queen Anne Boleyn in May 1536 was a rapid and highly orchestrated political execution. Following her failure to produce a male heir and growing ideological rifts with the King’s chief minister, Thomas Cromwell, she was arrested on May 2 and imprisoned in the Tower of London. The state leveled charges of high treason, incest, and adultery against her, alleging that she had conspired to compass the King’s death and engaged in illicit affairs with five men, including her brother, George Boleyn.
During her trial on May 15 in the Tower’s Great Hall, Anne defended herself with notable composure and precision, yet her condemnation was a predetermined administrative necessity. Found guilty by a jury of her peers, she was sentenced to death. King Henry VIII commuted the sentence from burning to beheading, summoning an expert executioner from Calais to perform the task with a heavy double-edged sword rather than an axe.
On the morning of May 19, Anne was led to a scaffold erected on Tower Green. She delivered a calculated final speech that avoided any direct criticism of the King to protect the status of her daughter, Elizabeth. Kneeling upright in the continental fashion, she was executed with a single strike, and her remains were immediately interred in an unmarked grave beneath the floor of the adjacent Chapel Royal of St. Peter ad Vincula.
