LEWISTON, ID – The first game on May 26th in the NAIA World Series was No.6 seed Johnson taking on No.8 seed Tennessee Wesleyan.
A mid-game surge from the Bulldogs led to a complete shutout victory for Tennessee Wesleyan.
To this point, both teams have already suffered losses in this tournament and needed to win to stay alive.
It took a while for anybody to find some type of rhythm in this game.
The Bulldogs did get on the board early from a Thomas Teel single, driving in Kolton Reynolds, taking a 1-0 lead.
The Johnson Royals would be playing lockdown defense and not allowing a single run for two innings.
But holding down the Bulldogs’ offense would only last so long for the Royals.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Bulldogs’ offense came alive and was unleashed, scoring a total of five runs.
This included Josh Shelly doubling down third base, driving in Hagen Escoto, Allan Gil, Fernandez, and Rob Gordon, taking a 4-0 lead.
But that was not all, as Kolton Reynolds would send out a sacrifice fly to left field, driving in David Ballenilla.
Tennessee Wesleyan would go on to take a commanding 5-0 lead over Johnson.
The Bulldogs at the bottom of the sixth once again could not stop, scoring another five runs.
The game would end at the bottom of the seventh by mercy rule, coming from a dominating Bulldogs performance, winning 11 to the Johnson Royals 0.
With this loss, the season for the Royals has now ended.
With this win for Tennessee Wesleyan, they will now move on to play the loser of IU Southeast and Southeastern.
