YouTube has been labelling AI-generated videos since 2024… IF the creators disclosed their use of AI tools when uploading it. Now the company has made some changes to its labelling system.
First, the labels will now be simpler and more prominent, shown directly below the video player for long-form videos, and as an overlay within YouTube Shorts.
The big change, though, is that YouTube is now using its own AI-detection technology to spot videos that are AI-generated, but haven’t been disclosed as such.
“If a creator doesn’t specify whether or not they used AI, but our systems detect significant photorealistic AI use, we will now automatically apply a label,” explained YouTube.
If the system false-flags a video, the creator will be able to update its disclosure status in the YouTube Studio dashboard, unless they used YouTube’s own AI tools (e.g. Veo and Dream Screen) or their video includes metadata showing that it IS “fully generative AI”.
“It’s important to note that a disclosure label alone does not change how a video is recommended or whether it’s eligible to earn money,” added YouTube in its announcement.
