UK producer Derwin Schlecker has been making inventive, invigorating electronic music as Gold Panda for the better part of two decades now, and he’s not about to stop. Today he’s announced TON UP, described as “the new full throttle album from Gold Panda,” and shared lead single “Ding The Motor” to get us all revved up.
The track is energetic from the start and never lets up. We begin with synth notes that hit like stabs of funky wah guitar (or is that a funky wah guitar that sounds like a synth?) and bass that’s liable to inspire involuntary gluteal contortions. Rhythmically, it’s almost like a late ’90s big beat single riding a tidal wave of hip-hop breakbeats, yet there’s a subtlety and sophistication at work in Gold Panda’s music even when it’s as raw and kinetic as this.
