Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester, died suddenly on September 4, 1588, at his lodge in Cornbury Park, Oxfordshire, at the age of 56. Only weeks prior, Dudley had reached the peak of his military career, standing proudly alongside Queen Elizabeth I at Tilbury during the tense standoff with the Spanish Armada. However, his health was rapidly failing due to a severe, recurring stomach ailment, which modern historians suspect may have been stomach cancer or malaria. Hoping to find relief, he began a journey to the thermal springs at Buxton. During a stopover at Rycote on August 28, he penned a final, deeply affectionate letter to Elizabeth to inquire about her health, signing himself as her “poor old servant.”
He never reached the baths. His condition deteriorated rapidly over the next few days, and his sudden passing plunged the Queen into absolute despair. Elizabeth was so devastated by the loss of her lifelong favorite and closest confidant that she locked herself alone in her bedchamber for days, refusing to eat or speak to her court. Her ministers eventually had to break down the door to ensure her safety. Elizabeth cherished his final note, keeping it locked in a treasure box by her bed with the inscription “his Last lettar” on the back, where it remained until her own death 15 years later. Per his wishes, Dudley was buried in the Beauchamp Chapel at St Mary’s Church in Warwick, leaving behind a grieving monarch and a lasting legacy as the ultimate favorite of the Elizabethan court.
