Jennifer Garner says the “upheaval” caused by her divorce from Ben Affleck caused her to take a break from acting to focus on their kids.
The 54-year-old actress, who shares three children with Affleck, opened up about how she balanced motherhood and her career while her kids were young during a June 3 interview with InStyle.
Garner said that she initially took time out of her career to welcome Violet, 20, Seraphina, 17, and Samuel, 13. “First of all, when you’re in a performance kind of role, you give up a year/year-and-a-half of performance while you are pregnant, having a baby, recovering,” she said.
However, though she did take on a few roles during that time, Garner says she chose not to work too often in the years surrounding her 2015 separation from Affleck. “When my kids were little, I worked so little, and then we had such an upheaval in our family, that I really hardly worked for a long time,” she said.

Now that her kids are older, Garner has been enjoying a return to acting of sorts with The Last Thing He Told Me and The Five Star Weekend. “[It’s a gift] to have this year and a half where I just indulged [in acting], because this job is very selfish. It’s all about your schedule,” Garner said. “It’s not about what the kids have going on at school. It’s not about pickups and drop-offs and making it home for dinner.”
Garner added that she refuses to lean into mom guilt when it comes to working. “When I work, I don’t apologize to my kids for it. I do thank them for being so sweet about it. But that’s part of life. Working hard is part of life, and messing up is part of life. Tripping and falling—there’s room for all of it,” she said.
Garner and Affleck officially divorced in 2018 and co-parent their kids amicably. Since late 2018, Garner has been in a relationship with CaliGroup CEO John Miller.
