Although it’s been many years since Sarah Ferguson served as a working royal, she still manages to be a source of tension within the royal family.
In an interview with The Mirror published on Thursday, May 21, royal author Andrew Lownie claimed that Fergie has found herself in a bit of a financial pickle and is begging the Firm for help. According to Lownie, Fergie is allegedly “negotiating” for a “nice pension” in return for agreeing not to participate in an explosive tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Royal sources later told RadarOnline that Lownie’s claims, along with Fergie’s alleged blackmail, sparked a lot of anxiety among senior royals.
“A lot of royals and their aides know Sarah remains far more connected to the inner workings of the monarchy than the public fully realizes, despite no longer being an official working royal,” one insider explained.
They added that Fergie’s decades of involvement with the royal family have created “a fear [that] she possesses a huge amount of private knowledge about family dynamics, internal tensions, and how certain scandals were handled behind closed doors.”
“That is why there is often a very delicate balancing act when it comes to Fergie’s position within the wider royal orbit,” the insider continued. “The preference is to keep Sarah broadly cooperative, included, and reasonably content rather than completely alienated, because nobody wants to test what might happen if she ever felt she had nothing left to lose publicly. But make no mistake – she is effectively bribing the royals into keeping her fixed for life with a pension by agreeing not to spill the institution’s secrets.”
Another source revealed that numerous individuals within the royal circle are “genuinely astonished by Sarah’s ability to remain connected to royal life after the number of scandals, controversies, and public embarrassments she has been associated with over the years. But she is kept close, as the old saying goes, she knows exactly where many of The Firm’s bodies are buried.”
While most are aiming to fulfill Fergie’s requests, Prince William doesn’t want anything to do with her. In fact, he’s reportedly “fuming” about her demands and frustrated that his father, King Charles, is even entertaining them.
Separate sources also told RadarOnline that Fergie is considered “the ultimate royal family leech,” and sadly, Charles is “likely to effectively buy Sarah’s silence by giving her a pension to shut up for the rest of her life.”
The mere fact that he’s even considering meeting Fergie’s demands has “left everyone stunned,” an insider told Closer in June 2026.
“They can’t believe Charles is even considering this,” the insider said. “William is fuming and saying Sarah will only see this as a green light to get lifelong handouts. Because that’s what this is, as far as William and a lot of other people are concerned.”
William reportedly understands Charles’ desire to protect the royal family from further embarrassment, but he doubts Fergie will “stick to her word.” In fact, William thinks she will make “endless demands” after this incident.
As of now, Charles “hasn’t made any promises” to Fergie, but “allowing her to skate away with no consequences and essentially give her a bail out, is going to be viewed very poorly by the public.” That said, William is doing everything he can to “steer his father away from letting the Yorks and their alleged behaviour further damage the monarchy and their family’s legacy.”
