A week after Disney suspended Jimmy Kimmel’s show on ABC, the talk show host is making his return to late-night TV. “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” will air on Sept. 23 after a brief hiatus prompted by the host’s comments on Charlie Kirk’s death.
Disney, the parent network of ABC, announced the return of the show on Sept. 22. But not all networks will be airing the program.
A Sinclair Broadcast Group representative said, “beginning Tuesday night, Sinclair will be preempting ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ across our ABC affiliate stations and replacing it with news programming,” in a statement to USA TODAY on Monday, Sept. 22.
Sinclair Broadcast Group stations in Eugene include KVAL, a CBS affiliate, and KMTR, an NBC affiliate.
Why was ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ taken off air?
Jimmy Kimmel on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
“Jimmy Kimmel Live!” was “pre-empted indefinitely” by ABC on Sept. 17. Kimmel commented on the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in a Sept. 15 episode of his show.
“Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country,” Disney said in a Monday, Sept. 22, statement to USA TODAY. “We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”
Why won’t Sinclair affiliates broadcast Jimmy Kimmel?
The Sinclair Broadcast Group scrubbed its local ABC affiliates of Jimmy Kimmel’s show following the comments he made about Kirk. Now, the company is demanding Kimmel apologize.
Sinclair’s vice chairman, Jason Smith, called Kimmel’s comments “inappropriate” and “deeply insensitive” in a statement issued Sept. 17. On Sept. 19, Sinclair replaced Kimmel’s ABC timeslot with a remembrance special on Charlie Kirk.
“We believe broadcasters have a responsibility to educate and elevate respectful, constructive dialogue in our communities,” Smith said.
