KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Workers with Missouri Workers Power, the 501(c)4 affiliate of the Missouri Workers Center delivered more than 4,000 petition signatures to force a public vote on the Royals stadium deal.
Friday afternoon the workers group delivered the signatures to the Kansas City Clerk.

The Missouri Workers Center says it triggers a process to place a citizens’ initiative on the ballot.
The proposal to build a new stadium near Crown Center includes a $600 million dollar commitment from the City.
The petition would require that people who live in Kansas City, Missouri have the opportunity to vote on the new stadium development before the city spends public money on it.
According to the Missouri Workers Center, the approach is modeled on a citizens’ petition that forced a public vote on the KCI airport.
“The signatures we dropped off will not undo the ordinance that the city council passed. It won’t undo that, but what it would do is introduce a new law that would give us an opportunity to vote on what our tax dollars are used for,” said Terrence Wise, a leader with the Missouri Workers Power group. “That sounds like a good idea to not only me but to a lot of Kansas Citians who signed on to this measure.”

Mayor Quinton Lucas responded to the petition on the Royals stadium development, saying:
As we have shared previously, we expect construction to start on the transformational new stadium and Crown Center redevelopment later this year or in the first quarter of next year. The combined projects will retain Hallmark’s corporate headquarters in the heart of our city and will welcome millions more visitors to the Greater Downtown and Midtown areas.
While the Royals and Crown Center redevelopment, including necessary binding agreements, are already well underway, we will continue to look forward to engagement with all members of our community to ensure good paying jobs are a key part of the project.
As seen with recent vastly more expensive stadium discussions, absent public referenda, with the Chiefs in Kansas and the Chicago Bears in Indiana, Kansas City will continue to operate respectfully, but swiftly to ensure it remains competitive in bringing new jobs and opportunities to our City.
According to the Missouri Workers Center, if the City Clerk verifies that the petition contains the required number of valid signatures from registered Kansas City voters, the proposed ordinance will proceed toward the ballot.

“I love the Royals. People love the Royals. The Royals have been a staple of this community for decades. This is not an issue about who opposes the downtown ballpark or who wants one. This is an issue simply about us having a voice on our tax dollars. I don’t care if it’s about the Royals or anything. Kansas Citians, when it comes to our tax dollars, we should have a say in it, and a vote in it,” Wise said.
