EW was in the room for the Confessions II film premiere and Q&A, which saw Madonna address a range of topics — including her desire to write dance music while she waited to find a writer for a planned scripted series about her life.
Madonna is also hard at work on her long-gestating feature-length biopic, which she’s set to direct with star Julia Garner in the lead role.
Garner appears in the Confessions II short film, with Madonna literally transforming into her within the 13-minute film’s runtime.
Other stars featured in the Confessions II short film include Benedict Cumberbatch, Gwendoline Christie, Kate Moss, Richard E. Grant, Madonna’s “Bring Your Love” duet partner, Sabrina Carpenter and many others.
The short film also serves as a companion piece for the album, featuring its first six tracks — including “Danceteria,” named after the shuttered New York City club that played a vital role in shaping Madonna’s connection to nightlife, and served as the spot where she met her longtime friend, actress Debi Mazar (who also appears in the film).
To further promote Confessions II — an album sequel to her 2005 opus Confessions on a Dance Floor — Madonna also mounted Thursday a surprise pop-up performance in Times Square, where she straddled a glass barrier 30 feet above the pavement in a shocking set that drew a huge crowd to the city center.
