Lena Waithe is opening up about one of the most personal chapters of her life, revealing that her brief marriage to Alana Mayo was driven more by commitment than by her own long-term happiness.
Speaking on Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, the creator of The Chi reflected on the marriage that lasted just two months after the couple secretly wed in November 2019. Waithe and Mayo had been together for roughly five years and became engaged in 2017 before ultimately separating in early 2020. Their divorce was finalized the following year.
During the conversation, Waithe said she entered marriage believing she was following the path she was supposed to take, rather than fully examining whether it aligned with the future she actually wanted.
The Emmy winner explained that she had focused on preserving and honoring the relationship, only to realize later that she had not given enough weight to her own evolving goals and sense of fulfillment.
“I just didn’t have the language or understanding of that,” Waithe said, explaining that her happiness “didn’t feel like it was important,” and that she was more concerned with honoring what she and Mayo had built together.
She also pointed to major differences in their long-term plans, particularly around children. According to Waithe, uncertainty about parenthood became one of the issues that forced her to take a deeper look at what she wanted from life.
Looking back, Waithe said she now recognizes that she spent more time envisioning a shared life than asking herself where she truly saw her future.
“All I knew was, ‘I want to be with this person. I want to have this house. I want to have this dog,'” she said, adding that she never stopped to ask herself, “‘Where do you want to be in five years, really?'”
The filmmaker described the breakup as a difficult experience that ultimately changed her perspective. Comparing the end of the marriage to a “car crash,” Waithe admitted she wishes she had handled parts of the separation differently.
“I wish I could have landed the plane better,” she said, adding that much of her criticism is directed inward rather than at Mayo.
Since the divorce, Waithe has continued to expand her career across television, film, and producing, while also building a long-term relationship with Cynthia Erivo. The pair first met at the 2018 Met Gala and have largely kept their relationship private despite frequently appearing together at major industry events, including the Oscars, the NAACP Image Awards, and the GLAAD Media Awards.
Today, Waithe says the experience taught her a lesson about love that extends beyond marriage. For her, the clearest sign of caring for someone is recognizing when both people may be happier apart.
“That’s how you know you really love somebody,” she said, “when you want them to be happy and happier without you.”
