Key Points

  • Schmigadoon! won Best Musical at the 2026 Tonys.

  • Producer Christine Schwarzman thanked Apple TV for canceling the TV series in the acceptance speech.

  • Schmigadoon! aired from 2021 to 2023, and was canceled ahead of a third season.

When one door to a magical musical town closes, another one opens.

Schmigadoon! took home the prestigious award for Best Musical at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday at the 79th annual Tony Awards, and the show’s producer had one team to thank: Apple TV.

“I think I should start by thanking Apple TV for canceling the third season of Schmigadoon!, the TV show, because without them dropping it, we couldn’t have picked it up and ran with it. So, thanks Apple TV,” Christine Schwarzman said on stage as the cast and crew stood behind her.

Schmigadoon! ran for two seasons from 2021 to 2023, and told the story of an on-the-rocks couple, Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key, who get trapped in a 1940s movie musical after stumbling into the woods on a backpacking trip. It featured an all-star cast of Broadway performers — including Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, Aaron Tveit, and Jane Krakowski — original songs, and choreography reminiscent of classic Golden Age shows.

Apple TV canceled the comedic musical series ahead of its third season in 2024, however. At the time, creator Cinco Paul announced on social media that he and his team had already written the season, which was set to include 25 songs.

“It’s a miracle we even got two seasons, honestly,” Paul said. “And I’m so grateful we did. And to all the fans of the show out there — thank you with all of my heart. Your love and support has meant so much, and the fact that you connected with our show, that it brought some joy, means the world to me.”

Paul concluded his post by suggesting that there might be a future for the show: “This was tough news to get, but the optimist in me is convinced it’s not the end of Schmigadoon. And maybe it’s even a happy beginning.”

That happy beginning was Schmigadoon! the musical, which debuted to rave reviews in April and is now a Tony winner.

Saturday Night Live‘s Lorne Michaels, who produced the musical, also spoke on stage at the Tonys, simply sharing, “We’re really grateful for this and it means everything.”

He concluded, “Sometimes, singing, dancing, a lot of jokes, and happy ending is really all you need. Thank you.”

Schmigadoon! beat out The Lost Boys, Titaníque, and Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) for the Best Musical win. Paul also won Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical, and Doug Besterman and Mike Morris won for Best Orchestrations.

Ahead of the musical’s Broadway aspirations, Paul told Entertainment Weekly, “All I’ll say is I want Schmigadoon! to conquer the world, and I won’t rest until every single person on the planet has seen our show, so make of that what you will.”
