We all love Robert Smith, but Olivia Rodrigo really loves Robert Smith. If her cover of “Boys Don’t Cry,” or her new song “the cure,” or her “Just Like Heaven” shoutout in “drop dead” haven’t made that clear, then her new duet with Smith in Barcelona will. During a surprise Primavera Sound set on Saturday, Rodrigo brought out The Cure frontman to debut “what’s wrong with me,” the latest preview of her upcoming third album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love. Smith had just played a 2.5-hour show the night before, and Rodrigo brought him out an affectionate introduction: “I just can’t believe that this song exists with the person it exists with, and I’m just so fucking over the moon.”
In the song, Rodrigo lists out a plethora of things making her lovesick. “I can’t eat, I can’t sleep, I think you’re what’s wrong with me,” she pleads, to which Smith answers, validating her feelings. It’s a lovely intergenerational duet between singers who know a thing or two about romantic yearning. The track marks Rodrigo’s first original collaboration, but the duo’s link-up has been a long time coming: Rodrigo brought Smith out at Glastonbury last year to perform both “Just Like Heaven” and “Friday I’m In Love,” and she later called him her “personal hero.” Ours too, Olivia.
You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love is out June 12. Watch her performance of “what’s wrong with me” below.
