When Neko Case arrives at the Bardavon in Poughkeepsie on October 22, she’ll be bringing more than a new album. At 56, the singer-songwriter finds herself in the midst of one of the most creatively expansive periods of a career already defined by restless reinvention.
For nearly three decades, Case has occupied a singular place in American music. Though often grouped with alt-country artists, her work has always resisted easy categorization. Her songs draw equally from folk traditions, power-pop, gothic storytelling, and surrealist imagery, all delivered through one of contemporary music’s most commanding voices. From the breakthrough Fox Confessor Brings the Flood (2006) through Middle Cyclone (2009) and Hell-On (2018), Case has built a catalog that prizes curiosity over convention and transformation over consistency.
Her latest album, Neon Grey Midnight Green, released last fall, may be the clearest expression yet of that ethos. The record was recorded live with a full band and intentionally preserves the sounds often scrubbed from modern recordings: breaths, room noise, even the rustle of sleeves. The result is an album that feels both expansive and intimate, emphasizing presence over perfection.
The album also represents another milestone. Case produced the record herself, a decision she has spoken about in the context of the industry’s longstanding lack of women, nonbinary, and trans producers. “People don’t think of us as an option,” she noted in announcing the tour. “I’m proud to say I produced this record.”
The new tour follows a period of unusual public visibility for an artist who has historically preferred letting the work speak for itself. In 2025, her memoir, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You, became a New York Times bestseller. Written with the same vivid language and dark humor that characterize her songs, the book chronicled a turbulent childhood and offered fans a deeper understanding of the experiences that shaped her fiercely independent worldview.
At the same time, Case has been branching into entirely new creative territory. This fall, “Thelma & Louise: A New Musical”—for which she wrote both music and lyrics—will premiere at London’s Young Vic Theatre. Original screenwriter Callie Khouri personally selected Case to create the score, an indication of how widely her storytelling abilities are respected beyond the world of popular music.
It’s a remarkable second act for an artist who has never seemed particularly interested in career arcs. Many musicians reach a point where they begin revisiting past successes. Case appears more interested in expanding her range. The memoir, the musical, the self-produced record, and the latest tour all suggest an artist operating from a position of hard-won confidence.
Every few years, Neko Case returns with new work and reminds listeners why she remains one of the most distinctive voices in American music. The difference this time is that her world seems larger than ever. The songs are still at the center, but they’re no longer the only story she’s telling.
Neko Case plays the Bardavon in Poughkeepsie on October 22. Tickets go on sale for members on June 11 at 10am and open to the public on June 12 at 10am.
