Prince William and Princess Catherine are reportedly preparing for any unexpected drama ahead of the Royal Family’s annual summer gathering at Balmoral, with insiders claiming the couple have already discussed a potential “quick escape” if tensions flare.
“There is still the threat of Harry turning up on the doorstep, in which case Kate and William will be heading for the car stat,” an insider told New Idea this week.
The Prince and Princess of Wales have attended the traditional Scottish retreat for more than 15 years, including before their 2011 wedding, and have regularly joined senior royals at the sprawling Balmoral estate each August.
However, this year’s gathering is expected to take place against a backdrop of growing divisions within the monarchy, prompting William, 43, and Catherine, 44, to remain cautious.
According to a palace source, the couple have even considered contingency plans for themselves and their children- Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, eight- should the atmosphere become uncomfortable.
“There are tensions that can’t be ignored, including serious succession issues, not just with the Yorks but also the Sussexes; Kate and Charles’ health; Anne’s workload; what to do about Camilla’s children; and the fact neither the Queen or the Princess Royal can agree on tradition,” the source told the publication.
The insider claimed differing views within the Royal Family over who should be welcomed to Balmoral have become a particular sticking point, particularly between William and his father, King Charles III.
While William and his aunt, Princess Anne, reportedly favour a smaller and more private family gathering, King Charles is far more generous with his invitations, raising concerns about who could potentially show up.
“William and Anne prefer the more exclusive, low-key family approach while Charles and Camilla want to invite every man and his dog, which is why Kate and William are right to worry about surprise guests from California.”
The claims come amid continuing speculation over Prince Harry’s fractured relationship with the Royal Family.
The Duke of Sussex last travelled to the UK in September, when he reportedly held a private meeting with King Charles but did not see his older brother, with whom he has been estranged since leaving the royal family in 2020.
Reports have long suggested the King and his heir differ on how the Sussex situation should be handled, with William said to favour a firmer approach while Charles remains open to reconciliation.
The father and son are also reportedly divided over how to handle the disgrace of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and the wider York family following the release of the Epstein files in February.
These files revealed the disturbing nature of the relationship between the former Duke of York and the convicted sex offender, leading to Andrew’s arrest by local police on suspicion of misconduct in public office and sex offences.
Andrew has consistently denied wrongdoing.
More broadly, William and Charles are said to hold contrasting visions for the institution’s future.
The 77-year-old monarch is believed to favour a more traditional and inclusive model, the Prince of Wales has repeatedly been linked to plans for a leaner approach.
On Sunday, sources close to William told royal editor Roya Nikkhah that the future king wants the monarchy to be “fit for purpose in the modern era” and intends to “look under the hood” of how the institution operates.
They added that the Prince of Wales plans to “do things differently” when he eventually ascends the throne.
However, until then, royal reporter Tom Sykes said that William understands he must continue to toe the line.
“William is a loyal servant and will ultimately go along with what his father wants, per the military foundational structures of the Royal Family,” Sykes wrote in his Substack.
