There is something quietly powerful about HARD SHELL, SOFT CENTER, the collaborative album from alternative music star Maka and acclaimed rapper and lyricist Phlow. In an era where many projects are designed to chase trends, this album feels refreshingly intentional, a body of work built on honesty, musicianship, and the kind of chemistry that cannot be manufactured.

Much of the early buzz has centred on opening track “LOSE MY MIND,” a song that will quickly become listeners favourite. With its infectious melody, and emotional depth, the track has drawn attention not only from me as a music executive but also from industry experts and observers. I commend and recommend this project for its strong potential for film, television, and commercial placements. It is the kind of song that lingers long after it ends.

The album’s strength extends far beyond its opening moments. Tracks such as “NO ONE,” “DIVE IN,” and “MEAN IT” are creative tracks that showcases a project rich in emotion, storytelling, and replay value. Together, the songs create a listening experience that feels cohesive and deeply personal.

At the heart of the album is expertise of the duo Maka and Phlow, whose artistry continues to set them apart within Nigeria’s alternative music landscape. Long celebrated for captivating stage presence, exceptional songwriting, and distinctive vocal delivery, Maka brings both confidence and vulnerability to the project. Every performance feels lived-in rather than performed, a reminder of why Maka and Phlow has remained respected voices to emerge from the scene in the last decade.

From her breakthrough performances at Freedom Park in Lagos to commanding stages across London and beyond, Maka has consistently built a career defined by authenticity rather than hype. Her ability to blend soul, jazz influences, alternative sounds, and contemporary African music has earned her a loyal audience and growing international recognition. Listening to “Hard Shell, Soft Center”, I now understand why she is increasingly regarded as one of the defining voices of Nigeria’s global alternative movement.

Phlow proves an equally important presence throughout the project. Known for her sharp pen and thoughtful lyricism, the UK-based rapper complements Maka’s vocal warmth with verses that are introspective, intelligent, and emotionally grounded. Rather than competing for space, both artists create a partnership that allows the album’s themes to breathe.

The title itself captures the essence of the project. Beneath its confident exterior lies a collection of songs unafraid to explore vulnerability, love, uncertainty, and emotional growth. It is this balance between strength and sensitivity that gives the album much of its appeal.

At just 10 tracks, “Hard Shell, Soft Center” avoids unnecessary excess. Every song feels purposeful, every collaboration meaningful, and every production choice carefully considered. The result is an album that rewards repeated listening and continues to generate conversation weeks after release.

And perhaps that is why “Hard Shell, Soft Center” continues to resonate. Beneath the polished production and memorable hooks is something far more valuable – a sense of truth.
