Zac Efron is building his first home in Australia with designer Joost Bakker using eco-conscious hemp as the primary material

Zac Efron is building his sustainable dream home in Australia!
The High School Musical alum, 38, is currently working on the eco-conscious build, which he’s dubbed “FutureCave,” with Dutch-Australian designer Joost Bakker. Efron’s unique home is coming to life an hour outside of Byron Bay in New South Wales, years after he purchased a 128-hectare plot of land there in 2020, local outlet the Australian Financial Review previously reported.
According to the outlet, the build will mostly be made out of hemp, including the internal bricks and joinery. The plant will be sourced from a farm in southern New South Wales. Other pieces in the home, from Efron’s mattress to the curtains and pillows, will also reportedly be derived from hemp.
Bakker has been sharing updates on the construction process for Efron’s new home to his Instagram account, including in a May 8 Instagram post in which he revealed they were officially getting to work.
“Excited to get started on Zac’s house!” Bakker wrote in the caption alongside a photo of him posing with the actor and their partners on the project.

Most recently, the designer shared another update through a joint Instagram post with Plantbord, a company that describes its product as “a particle board made from materials that restore soil health + the health of the people working and living with it,” per its Instagram account.
According to the May 22 Instagram post’s caption, Efron’s home will be made using 200 of the sustainable boards to construct the “kitchen and bathroom joinery.”
Per the Australian Financial Review, the area in which Efron, Bakker and their team are building the star’s home features a lush virgin rainforest, 500-year-old cedar trees and serene waterfalls.
The home will reportedly boast six “bedroom pods” that are connected by an outdoor walkway, with each pod having its own bathroom and rooftop garden. There will also be a large living area located on the property.
Efron opened up to the outlet about why he chose to construct such a unique abode in Australia, noting that the property might become “the coolest house ever built.”
“I live a pretty fast-paced life and work quite a bit, so in between movies and press tours, my number one goal is always to take time for myself and rest and recharge and to be in nature as much as possible, and as close to the earth as I can, and this land just feels like it’s perfect for that,” he said.
Bakker, who first met Efron while he was filming his Netflix travel series Down to Earth in 2021, previously opened up about the moment the 17 Again star asked him to lead the project in a November 2025 Instagram post.

“It’s not everyday of the week that @zacefron asks you to design his home, I am beyond excited!” Bakker wrote in the caption at the time. “Zac fell in love with @futurefoodsystem and then our family home in Monbulk and now wants a home of his own + best of all he wants me to push my ideas as far as they can go!”
“So here we are – designing and building Zac’s home. It’s a dream come true. Every element is pushing my team creatively and I love nothing more than testing so many ideas,” he concluded.

In 2021, a source told PEOPLE that Efron had put his L.A. home on the market and was preparing to put down roots in Australia. “As of now, he has no plans to live permanently in L.A. again,” the insider said at the time. “He loves Australia and considers it his home.”
At the time, Efron was dating Australian model Vanessa Valladares, however the pair called it quits later that year after 10 months of dating.
