“The Odyssey” remains unchallenged as it sails to box office victory with $639 million global tally

The Odyssey is getting the epic box office narrative that it deserves.

Christopher Nolan‘s adaptation of Odysseus’ long journey home is enjoying a sensational second weekend in theaters, as fans flock to see the 3,000 year old mythological tale unfold on the big screen. The film has generated a massive $286.3 million at the domestic box office, per Rentrak, after picking up an additional $87 million during its second weekend in theaters. Globally, the film has amassed an impressive $639.6 million, just two weeks into its run.

Already, Nolan’s latest epic is eyeing the $1 billion mark. It would not be the first of his films to cross the benchmark: The Dark Knight achieved $1.006 billion while its sequel, The Dark Knight Rises, went even further with $1.084 billion.

While there’s no denying the massive turnout that The Odyssey has enjoyed, the film’s success is also aided by IMAX screens. Many cinephiles are determined to see Nolan’s sword-and-sandal epic — the first feature to be shot entirely on 70mm IMAX cameras — on the biggest screen possible. So much so that IMAX seats in major markets, from Los Angeles to New York City, are sold out weeks in advance with scalpers looking to up-charge moviegoers by reselling tickets for hundreds of dollars. 

Thanks to its positive word-of-mouth and undeniable hold on premium screens, The Odyssey is on track to become one of the highest-grossing releases of the year.

It certainly helps that, thus far, The Odyssey has no real competitor at the box office. Disney’s live-action reimagining of Moanagot off to a sluggish start and hasn’t picked up steam three weeks into its run. The film grabbed another $10.5 million over the weekend, bringing its domestic tally to $102 million with a global total of $228 million.

The more significant performance was from Toy Story 5: The fifth entry in the Pixar franchise has officially crossed the $1 billion mark after just six weeks in theaters. The film picked up another $10 million domestically and a massive $34.7 million from international markets, bringing its global tally to $1.02 million. This is no big surprise given the film’s massive debut and the fact that its predecessors — Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4 — soared into the $1 billion club in 2010 and 2019 respectively. Toy Story 5 is now the third film of the year to cross this box-office milestone, after Michael ($1.01 billion) and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($1.01 billion).

Rounding out the weekend’s top five was the debut of Hadestown: The Musical — a proshot of the hit Broadway show with its original 2019 cast — which earned $9.6 million at the domestic box office, while Minions & Monsters picked up an additional $9.6 millions four weeks in for a domestic tally of $155 million and global yield of $411.8 million.

Looking ahead, one Tom Holland movie might give another Tom Holland movie a run for its money. The actor who stars as Telemachus in Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s Greek epic is due to swing through theaters next weekend as Peter Parker inSpider-Man: Brand New Day. Joined by his wife (and costar in both) Zendaya, Holland will lead his fourth solo Marvel film, donning his superhero persona for the first time since 2021.

The film has just one obstacle to deal with — The Odyssey has claimed the IMAX screens for an exclusive three-week run, meaning Brand New Day will open without IMAX and instead have to lean on other premium-large format screens (Dolby, RPX, etc). But good news for Holland and Zendaya — audiences will have their pick of two blockbuster movies when it comes to seeing the couple on the big screen.

Brand New Day will see Holland’s young hero embarking on a fresh start after the traumatic events of No Way Home — a pursuit that will be interrupted by a mysterious figure who has the ability to take over other people’s bodies. Along with Holland and Zendaya, the film stars Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Tramell Tillman, and Stranger Things star Sadie Sink as a top-secret character.
