Growing up, Shaye Scott never felt fully at home in her skin.
“Since my earliest memories of life, I have had gender incongruence around, you know, that area of my body,” the 41-year-old influencer — who came out as trans over 15 years into her marriage with her wife Amanda — tells PEOPLE. “It’s something that I kind of always put on the back burner.”
Since her public gender transition in 2023, Shaye and Amanda’s story has become familiar to their combined following of over 1 million across Instagram and TikTok.
In 2019, Shaye first shared with her wife that she experienced gender dysphoria, a feeling of discomfort that a person experiences when their gender identity doesn’t align with the sex assigned to them at birth. Over the next several years, the couple left the Mormon Church, started sharing Shaye’s transition with their family — including their three kids — and Shaye underwent facial feminization surgery.

Still, Shaye had long considered whether bottom surgery would be a part of her medical transition.
“It’s a major surgery, so it’s something you wanna take very seriously, but also just to make sure that it was the right decision for me,” she says.

As she was mulling over the decision, Shaye says that it was in part her wife’s reassurance and encouragement to pursue a procedure to feel more at home in her body that convinced her to pull the trigger.
“Amanda was incredibly supportive and almost, I want to say, positively cheering me on,” Shaye tells PEOPLE. “I built up a lot of insecurities around losing people if I was to ever be me. And I had her be like, ‘This is something I can tell is important to you, and I want this for you.’ ”
In February, Shaye finally got her procedure, and she shared several updates with her followers along the way — even though the couple initially thought they might refrain from posting about such a personal choice.
“Every step we’ve taken in our transition, we’ve put it out into the light — just been transparent about it. I feel like it’s helped us to feel more genuine,” Shaye says. “It’s obviously not something we had to share with people, but we chose to.”
“Most importantly, I think anything we can do that can help misconceptions [is worth it],” she adds.

And now several months out from the procedure, Shaye says she feels more comfortable in her skin than ever — and she hasn’t looked back since surgery day.
She tells PEOPLE: “After I had all this buildup with this procedure — because it’s very serious and there’s a lot of negativity out there about it — this is probably the first procedure I did where there hasn’t been a moment of regret at all.”
