On Thursday, September 25, 2025, the vehicle he traveled in struck a Royal Newfoundland Constabulary patrol car. Police stated that the crash happened shortly before 1 a.m. and caused “significant damage to both of the vehicles involved.”
The RNC reported that emergency responders transported three people to the hospital: a 59-year-old male driver, Hartnett, 47, and the officer in the patrol car. Authorities said the two men in the SUV appeared to have minor injuries, while medical staff treated the officer as a precaution. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported that Hartnett had been returning home from the set when the collision occurred.
Hartnett’s representative, Susan Patricola, confirmed to USA TODAY on September 29 that the actor was “looked at and then released back to work.” She confirmed that Hartnett resumed filming and that the incident did not affect production. Investigators have not yet disclosed further details about the crash.
Jesse McKeown created the six-episode Netflix series, which films and takes place in Newfoundland. Hartnett stars in the project and also serves as an executive producer. In the show, he portrays a fisherman who fights to protect his family and community from a mysterious sea creature that threatens their town.
Hartnett recently played a role in M. Night Shyamalan’s 2024 film Trap and appeared in the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer. He also featured in Fight or Flight and the Black Mirror episode “Beyond the Sea,” and he will next star in Verity alongside Anne Hathaway. Hartnett married actress Tamsin Egerton in 2021, and the couple welcomed their fourth child in February 2024.
