The Kansas City Royals outfield depth took a significant hit Thursday after center fielder Kyle Isbel was diagnosed with a Grade 3 tear of a portion of the plantar fascia in his left foot, an injury expected to keep him out for an extended period. The team placed Isbel on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with left plantar fasciitis, and further testing later revealed the severity of the injury.

Isbel said he had been dealing with discomfort in his foot for several weeks before aggravating the condition during Tuesday’s game against the Texas Rangers. The issue worsened while running the bases, and the pain intensified after he had to quickly retreat to first base following a play. Kansas City has not announced a timetable for his return, and the organization expects to gain a clearer understanding of his recovery timeline after additional evaluations in the coming days. Before returning to baseball activities, Isbel will need substantial healing time.
The 29-year-old has once again been the Royals’ primary center fielder in 2026. Statcast credits him with four Outs Above Average, a figure ranking in the 90th percentile across Major League Baseball. Defensive Runs Saved rated him at minus-2, while his overall defensive reputation continued to be a major asset for Kansas City.
At the plate, Isbel performed much as he has throughout his career. Through 56 games this season, he recorded a .244 batting average with three home runs, 11 RBIs and a .652 OPS. Entering 2026, his career slash line stood at .235/.288/.365, and his current .244/.298/.354 performance remained consistent with those numbers. Since debuting with the Royals in 2021, Isbel has appeared in 552 regular-season games, compiling a .238 average with 26 home runs and 155 RBIs.
To address the vacancy, Kansas City recalled outfielder Kameron Misner from Triple-A Omaha. The move had been anticipated almost immediately after Isbel exited Tuesday’s game, as Misner was pulled from Omaha’s contest in preparation for a possible promotion.

Misner, 28, has been one of the organization’s hottest hitters in the minors this season. Across 59 Triple-A games, he produced a .276/.373/.547 slash line with 13 home runs, 51 RBIs and 11 stolen bases. He was recently named International League Player of the Week after going 10-for-24 from June 1-7, collecting three doubles, five homers, two steals and four multi-hit performances. At the major league level, Misner owns a .203 batting average with five home runs and 22 RBIs in 80 career games with the Rays and Royals.
The Royals are expected to rely on a combination of Misner, Lane Thomas and Tyler Tolbert in center field during Isbel’s absence, with all three capable of handling multiple outfield positions.
