Emily Ratajkowski is opening up about navigating the breakdown of her marriage after giving birth to her son.
The model, 35, wed film producer Sebastian Bear-McClard, 45, at City Hall in New York City in February 2018, after only cozying up to each other a couple of weeks prior.
Their relationship blossomed, and they welcomed their first and only son, Sylvester Apollo Bear, on March 8, 2021. But a year later, the couple decided to file for divorce.
In a candid essay for The Cut, published on Friday, June 12, and titled “Mother F—er,” Ratajkowski revealed that her “marriage collapsed,” adding that she and Bear-McClard stopped being intimate six months after she gave birth.

“It was a violent transition into a new reality of screaming baby on my aching tit and ring on my swollen finger,” she wrote. “And then, in a time period that felt both instant and excruciatingly slow, my marriage collapsed. Six months after my son was born, my husband and I stopped having sex. Less than a year later, we separated.”
The mom penned that she “hated the condescending way people looked at me in the wake of my breakup,” adding that she “couldn’t stand my pathetic reflection in their eyes.”
In the rare, honest article, Ratajkowski said that she had always feared becoming a single mother.
But after dating again, she decided to embody herself as a “villain,” and instead saw herself as “a woman who needs nothing from men.”
In July 2022, a source close to Ratajkowski confirmed to PEOPLE that the couple had split, describing it as “Em’s decision.”
“She is doing okay. She is strong and focused on her son. She loves being a mom,” the insider told PEOPLE at the time.

The I Feel Pretty star said she initially declined Bear-McClard’s nontraditional proposal during her 2018 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
“He proposed to me at Minetta Tavern and he didn’t have a ring, so I was like mmm, nah,” she shared. “And then he took the paper clip that the bill was paid with and made me a ring, which I actually thought was really romantic.”
Even during her wedding, Ratajkowski opted not to wear white, instead going for a mustard yellow outfit paired with a black hat.

When it came to choosing wedding bands, she and Bear-McClard opted for something a bit out of the ordinary. Ratajkowski explained that they went to an Israeli jewelry designer’s studio after hours and “hammered them out,” using a “little blow torch.”
Speculation about their separation circulated online after Ratajkowski was seen running errands without her wedding ring in 2022.
